Bernard Vincent Derrick, 98, of Honesdale, died on Monday, January 27, 2025 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Ardis G. Ihlefeldt on July 28, 2020. The couple married on May 7, 1949.

Born on April 7, 1926 in Honesdale, he was the son and last surviving member of the John and Blanche (Bates) Derrick family. Bernie was a US Army veteran who served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He began working at the former Weeks Lumber Yard in Honesdale and after 40 years at Narrowsburg Lumber he retired.

An active member of Texas #4 Fire Co., Bernie would call Bingo for many years at the fire hall. Every year, he would walk the streets of Honesdale visiting local businesses to sell chicken barbecue tickets to raise money for the fire department. Bernie also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale where he and his wife participated in its Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.

Bernie enjoyed fishing with his friends and playing solitaire. He enjoyed spending time at the Honesdale Senior Center playing cards and socializing.

Surviving are his children, Ronald Derrick and wife Elizabeth of Waymart, Patricia Wolcott and husband Kevin, Diane Richter and husband David and Denise Latourette and husband Grant all of Honesdale; 7 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Andrew, John, Merton, Francis and Clarence Derrick; his sisters, Rosela Gibson and Florence Bishop.

Bernie’s family would like to thank Melissa and Michele of Interim Nurses and Wayne Memorial Hospice nurses, Charlene and Margaret for their care and compassion.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 7th at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale at 10 am. Inurnment with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements by Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale.
