Alvira R. Risner, 96 of Scranton and formerly of Waymart, died on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Allied Skilled Nursing in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Irving Ward and second husband Paul Risner.

Born on February 10, 1925 in Peekskill, NY, she was the daughter of the late Amos C. and Frances Morrison Gregory. She began working for Katz’s Underwear Factory and retired from Moore Business Forms. For over 20 years, she enjoyed volunteering at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Alvira was a faithful member of the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale and enjoyed spending time at the senior citizens center in Waymart. She enjoyed reading, going for walks, word puzzles and traveling with her husband Paul.

Surviving is her daughter, Frances Frey of Peckville; her Goddaughter, Diann Welsh of Honesdale; 17 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and 1 great great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her sons, Donald and Richard Piotrowski, her daughter, Barbara Varcoe, a brother, David Gregory and sisters, Alice Holbert and Betty Gummoe.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 28th at Indian Orchard Cemetery in Honesdale at 11 am. Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale.
