Foster, 91, of Honesdale, died peacefully at home, Friday, July 3, 2015, surrounded by her family. Born in Lookout, PA on July 26, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Arnold E. and Nora H. (Cole) Rutledge. On January 19, 1946, she was united in marriage to William W. Foster, who preceded her in death on January 25, 2000. She was a graduate of Damascus High School, class of 1939, and the Wayne Commercial School. She was a secretary, retiring from Wayne Highlands School District in 1985, and a homemaker. Throughout her life, Alice was a devoted and involved member of her community. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Honesdale, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for over fifty years. She also served on a number of the church committees and was the first woman to serve on the church council. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Wayne Council of Republican Women, Honesdale Women’s Club, Beech Grove Grange, Seelyville Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, the Wayne Choralaires and the Honesdale Country Club at Kellows Pond. In addition, after her retirement, she served as a member of the Wayne Highlands School District board of directors. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah (Brian) Leidy of Wellsboro and Constance (Stephen) McDonnell of Waverly; daughter-in-law Ann Foster; grandchildren Kelly Leidy Carson, Christopher, Jan and Erin Leidy, Tracey Foster, Allison (Chris) Brown, Elizabeth (Ryan) Dewar, Alexandra and Cole McDonnell, six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son W. Brian Foster, brothers Edward and Charles Rutledge and sisters Thelma Brown and Norma Lord. Alice was a gracious and thoughtful person who touched the lives of many. Her loving presence will be long felt by her family and the community she loved. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 7th at 11am at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Honesdale with the Rev. Richard Mowery officiating. Interment will follow in Glen Dyberry Cemetery, Honesdale. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Monday from 4 to 7.
