William Young of Torrey, Honesdale died on March 18, 2018 at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a short illness. He was 85.
Bill was born in Honesdale PA, the only child of Elsie Young Roegen. He grew up in the Milanville area and attended Damascus High School where he was a basketball standout and Future Farmers of America member. He married Lois Sporer of Honesdale in 1952. She predeceased Bill in 1989. Together they operated a small dairy farm in Torrey PA, raised five children and were members of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church. Besides farming, Bill worked in local factories, particularly Banner Shoe and Moore Business Forms. He started with Moore as a press operator and rose through the ranks to foreman and then pressroom supervisor. He was beyond reliable and well respected. Many lasting friendships were made, some of which endure to this day. Several of the old gang still meet for breakfast every week, including Don Doney, E.A. Hooker, Bob Abbott, John Malloy, Joe Davis and Ron Chorba. Bill looked forward to their get together each week. He was also a lifelong and oft disappointed Mets and Jets fan.
I addition to his wife, Bill was predeceased by an infant daughter, Nancy Jean, and longtime companion Beverly Bunting. Surviving are: Debra Young and husband Michael Genovese; Linda Jones and husband Art Jones; James Young and wife Victoria; Joyce Potter and husband Bruce; Marc Young and companion Heather White. His grandchildren are Celeste Genovese, Lindsay Young, Christopher Young, Hannah Young, William Young, Ariel Young and Cory Jones. Great grandchildren are Anthony D’Ambrosio, William Young, Michelle Young and Althea Ebbert.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the Hessling Funeral Home, Honesdale PA, with visitation on Wednesday, March 21st from 4-7pm and Thursday morning from 10am-11 with a Catholic prayer service at the same location. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Honesdale in the spring. Memorial contributions can be made to Leg Up Farm, 4880 N. Sherman St., Mt Wolf PA 17347 or online at give2legup.org.
