Kathryn “Rita” (McCormick) Burkavage, 98, of Honesdale, died on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Burkavage on March 22, 2002. The couple married on August 4, 1951.

Born on January 25, 1919 at the family home in Egypt, PA, she was the daughter of the late James F. and Mary Margaret Fives McCormick. She was a graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School, class of 1936. Rita later attended Beauty School and was a teller at the Honesdale National Bank for 13 years before raising her family.

Rita was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. She enjoyed dancing Saturday nights at the Fireside with the gang. She always made sure you were well fed with her signature bread and rolls.

Surviving are her sons Dan Burkavage and wife Debra, Paul Burkavage and wife Sue and John Burkavage Jr. and wife Karen all of Honesdale; her daughters Joan Spencer and partner Jim, Jean Nolan and husband John and Marie Bryant and husband Rod all of Honesdale; her brother Mike McCormick of Fort Washington, PA; sister-in-law Susan McCormick of Egypt; 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandson Stanley Burkavage; brothers Frank, Paul, Ben and Jim McCormick and her sister Margaret O’Hara.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 2nd at 11am in St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Honesdale. Friends may visit for the hugging ceremony at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Friday, 4 to 7.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. John the Evangelist Parish, 414 Church St. Honesdale, PA 18431 or the Ronald McDonald House, Danville, PA.
