May Margaret Rutherford, RN, 83, of Tyler Hill, PA and formerly of Ridgewood, NJ and Point Pleasant, NJ died on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Melvyn F. Rutherford. The couple married on January 15, 1956.

Born on May 5, 1934 in Paterson, NJ, she was the daughter of the late John S.F. Sommerrock and Helen Johnson Sommerrock. She was a graduate of St. Luke’s High School in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ and later at St. Joseph’s Hospital School for Nurses in Paterson, NJ.

May was a former board member and past president of Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County for 28 years and a member of HCP of Wayne County, PA. She was president of Wayne County Professional Women’s Organization for 6 years, 2003-2009. She was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale where she was a lecture and a term member of Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults for 17 years. She was also a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the USA.

In addition to her husband, May is survived by her children Thomas Rutherford, Karen Lieb and husband Steven, Laura Renner and husband Richard, and Lisa Correale and husband David; her four granddaughters Erin Hightower, Sara Renner, Dayna Correale, and Li-Fen Correale; and her two great grandchildren Abby Hightower and Nate Hightower; as well as her two sisters Kathy Boyle and Dorothy Beatty.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on April 28th at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale at 10am. Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County, PA, Victims Intervention Program, Dessin Animal Shelter and the National Kidney Foundation.
